It was like waiting for a Bears playoff game to start, the feeling I had waiting for the Presidential debate to start. I was rushing home from work to get there just as Mccain and Obama were taking the stage. I and over 50 million people were glued to the set to see how their respective candidates would separate themselves from the other. The main thing I wanted to observe was each candidate's posture and control.
As each man were given the rules and the agenda I could not wait for this milestone to get underway. Going in I had expectations of Mccain being confident with foreign affairs and him giving Obama all he could handle. But of course, the current economic conjuncture that we have would take up a portion of the evening's bullet points.
As I watched the two, I saw Barack Obama being very cool and collect and John Mccain seeming to become slightly exasperated during the first round. He never once made eye contact and barely turned his torso towards the latitude of Obama. As things heated up going into foreign policy, Mccain's body language read as if he was holding back strong words he would have loved to release. Looking down and smirking, speaking under his breath whenever Obama had a rebuttal to what Mccain just stated. I noticed that he never called Barack by his first name, while Obama constantly made it comfortable by saying "John" whenever he was speaking to him and turning towards him before giving rebuttals. Mccain instead used the impersonal "Senator Obama" and always spoke directly to Jim Leher instead acknowledging his opponent.
What about Obama does John Mccain hate so much? His youth. His charismatic personality. His poise. His passion, what?
I think Mccain has such disdain for Barack because in his world Obama would be but an afterthought by now. His privileged background given to him by his birthright. His hero's welcome after his years of military service. His stroke of luck by meeting a young heiress in a bar while he was comptiplating his marriage with his wife Carol after she suffered her own crippling ordeal during his captivity, due to an automobile accident. His easy transition into politics thanks to his honorable service in the military.
His thoughts, what in the world is this young Black kid from humble beginnings still doing here? Why is he climbing in the polls? Why aren't the lies I have been spreading working? Why is America behind him and not me?
The answer "John" is that he is genuine and believable. We know when Obama as President sits down with a country like Russia or North Korea he will give them eye contact and respect. He will not let his arrogance and pride take over his better judgement. He will not choose to ally himself with a person who is unqualified for the job just for political gain even though he knows it would help him in his quest. We knowObama will not lead this country on a journey of self indulging conquests to beat every enemy into submission while allowing Untied States to fall into a downward spiral that is simply, John Mccain's ego.
