Abu Ghraib to Have Re-Grand-Opening

KIM GAMEL | Associated Press

(AP) BAGHDAD — Iraq will reopen the notorious Abu Ghraib prison next month, but it's getting a facelift and a new name, a senior justice official said Saturday.

The heavily fortified compound of gray, stonewalled buildings and watchtowers has come to symbolize American abuse of some prisoners captured in Iraq after photos were released showing U.S. soldiers sexually humiliating inmates at the facility.

The scandal stoked support for the insurgency and was one of the biggest setbacks to the U.S. military effort to win the peace in Iraq.

The renovated facility will be called Baghdad's Central Prison because the name Abu Ghraib has left a "bitter feeling inside Iraqis' hearts," deputy Justice Minister Busho Ibrahim said.

Abu Ghraib, which was a torture center under Saddam Hussein, has been closed since 2006.

The prison will house 3,500 inmates when it reopens in mid-February and will have a capacity for about 15,000 by the end of this year, Ibrahim told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.

The announcement comes as the U.S. military has begun handing over about 15,000 detainees in its custody to the Iraqis under a new security agreement, prompting concern about Iraq's beleaguered judicial system. The United Nations warned in a recent human rights report about overcrowding and "grave human rights violations" of detainees in Iraqi custody.

"We have crowded prisons and the opening of Baghdad's Central Prison will help ease the problem," Ibrahim said.

He said the facility will be operated according to international standards.

Last year, the government said it would turn a section of the 280-acre (113-hectare) prison into a museum documenting Saddam's crimes but not the abuses committed by U.S. guards.

The photos from Abu Ghraib brought another serious stain to America's reputation after worldwide protests against the March 2003 invasion. They also discredited Washington's claims that it was trying to build a country based on rule of law and respect for human rights on the wreckage of dictatorship.

In all, 11 U.S. soldiers were convicted of breaking military laws and five others were disciplined.

American authorities implemented a series of reforms in the aftermath, although they still faced complaints about prolonged detentions without charges.

Violence has declined dramatically in Iraq but militants continue to stage attacks, with a spate of bombings and assassinations ahead of Jan. 31 provincial elections.

On Saturday, a suicide car bomber struck an Iraqi police patrol in the former insurgent stronghold of Karmah west of Baghdad, killing four people, including a senior officer, and wounding six others, according to police and hospital officials.

The U.S. military said two people were killed and four wounded.

Karmah, 50 miles (80 kilometers) west of Baghdad, is in Anbar province where the U.S. has handed over security responsibility to Iraqi forces.

Gunmen also opened fire on a checkpoint south of the capital manned by government-backed Sunni fighters who have joined forces with the Americans against al-Qaida in Iraq. Two of the so-called Sons of Iraq were killed in the attack in Jurf al-Sakr and two others were wounded, according to police and a local Sunni leader.

A roadside bomb targeted a police patrol in a mainly Sunni area of Baghdad, killing one policeman and wounding five other people, authorities said.

The Iraqi officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to release the information.

North of the capital, a suspected insurgent and a woman were killed and a girl was wounded by a gunshot during a U.S.-Iraqi military operation targeting al-Qaida in Iraq near the village of Hawija, the U.S. military said.

Local police and witnesses said those killed were a Saddam-era army officer and his wife, and said their 7-year-old daughter was wounded.

The woman was killed when she was spotted reaching under a mattress and did not show her hands as ordered, according to a U.S. military statement, which added a pistol was later found under the mattress.

Complaints about civilian casualties during military operations have led to fierce criticism of U.S. forces and prompted the Iraqis to insist on stricter oversight under the new security pact that took effect on Jan. 1.

Two U.S. soldiers also died of non-combat causes in separate incidents Saturday in Iraq, the military said. The deaths raised to at least 4,232 members of the U.S. military who have died in the Iraq war since it began in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.

Quick Jab at the Gop & Obama

So far so good the first week for President Obama. Closing Gitmo, no more torture, Clinton's appointment etc..... But then there is the issue of William Lynn, President Barack Obama's pick for deputy Defense secretary and a former Raytheon lobbyist. Mr. President, if you say you will not have lobbyist working for you then you need to drop this guy and move on, end of discussion. Practice what you preach.

I move on to the GOP. What the hell are you smoking? Looking on the National Republican Congressional Committee's web site, it seems they are in some fantasy world about the economy. At this particular point in time, I would not use words like "robust" & "strong" to describe the economy and job situation. But apparently not the NRCC. "Thanks to Republican economic policies, the U.S. economy is robust and job creation is strong." That's what the website says. If you want to credit for something than take credit for the current situation. After eight years of tax cuts and six of total republican control we are in the biggest recession since the depression. Thanks guys.

Former Top New York Republican Senate Leader Indicted

(AP) ALBANY, N.Y. - Joseph Bruno, who was New York's top Republican as the state Senate majority leader, was accused in a federal indictment Friday of abusing his public position to enrich himself.

Bruno, who retired from the Legislature in July after more than a dozen years leading the Senate, was charged in an eight-count indictment by the U.S. attorney for the Northern District of New York. He is accused of using his position to steer contracts and grants to businesses that paid him a total of $3.2 million in consulting fees or other compensation from 1993 through 2006.

Bruno exploited "his official position for personal compensation and enrichment" in dealing with companies and 16 unions with business before the state, according to the indictment.

Bruno pleaded not guilty during a brief court appearance Friday. He deflected questions from reporters but planned to hold a news conference later in the day.

The indictment follows a federal investigation that has lasted three years. The indictment accuses Bruno of failing to provide the honest services required of a public official. He is accused of entering into a web of business relationships that enriched him and theat he kept concealed.

In one example, Bruno is accused of soliciting officials of multiple labor unions to hire Wright Investment Services as their financial adviser even as he was paid $1.3 million from Wright.

Bruno represented his Troy, N.Y.-area district for 32 years. He seized power in the Senate by staging a Thanksgiving Day coup in 1994 with the consent of George Pataki, who had just been elected governor. Bruno became the most powerful Republican in state government when Elliot Spitzer succeeded Pataki.

Bruno, who grew up in poverty in Glens Falls north of Albany, worked his way through college and eventually became a top executive in a private telecommunications company. The sale of the company in 1990 and other business dealings had made him a millionaire. He subsequently started a consulting company and dabbled in horse breeding on his sprawling Rensselaer County farm a 25-minute drive from the state Capitol.

After his retirement, Bruno became chief executive officer of CMA Consulting Services. CMA, an information technology consulting business based in the Albany County suburb of Latham, is headed by Kay McCabe Stafford, the widow of Republican Sen. Ronald Stafford.

Air-Bombing Permitted Over Dick Cheney's Home......Not Exactly

It's official, we can fly directly over Dick Cheney's house again. Cheney's fancy little no fly zone has expired. Which means we can gas up and start our flight patterns and head for St. Michael's Maryland. Shouldn't be too hard to spot a old bald man in a wheelchair.......(Just Kidding) :

Lockheed Martin flight service personnel confirmed that a no-fly zone centred on former Vice President Dick Cheney's weekend home in St. Michael's, Maryland expired last night, and was replaced today by a slightly larger temporary no-fly zone around Vice President Joe Biden's home in Wilmington, Delaware.

Cheney's protection zone, established in November 2005, excluded aircraft from flying at 1,500ft and below in a 1nm-radius cylinder of airspace around his weekend retreat.

For Biden, the US Federal Aviation Administration has set up a 1.5nm-radius temporary flight restriction (TFR) zone, also with a 1,500ft cap, which starts today and expires on 27 January. No word on whether Biden's TFR will become permanent.

Obama To Re-Open Lady Liberty

I think this is a great move. The crown has been shut down since the attacks. In the beginning it was smart to close it down. But going on eight years we can no longer live in fear anymore. I honestly did not know it was still closed, did you? :

Visitors to Liberty Island and the Statue of Liberty will once again be able to climb the 354 steps from the base of the Statue of Liberty to the iconic crown that overlooks New York Harbor -- but not quite yet.

Visitors to Liberty Island and the Statue of Liberty will once again be able to climb the 354 steps from the base of the Statue of Liberty to the iconic crown that overlooks New York Harbor -- but not quite yet.

Opening the crown "is very important to me," said Salazar, but he added that any such plan must include the safety of the public.

Menendez suggested there may be some sort of lottery to allow limited numbers of tourists access to the crown on a daily basis.

After Sept. 11, access to the crown was closed as a security measure, along with the rest of the Statue and Liberty Island.

How is Fox News Treating Obama Since the Inauguration?

I watch and read all news. From conservative to liberal I watch or read it. I leave my mind open and refuse to be brainwashed by one political party. However I do lean to left on more issues than to the right, but I keep myself open. Networks are a different story though from MSNBC to Fox News the bias continues. Check out Jon Stewart's look at Fox News since the inauguration:

Racial Love Continues....."Druken Negro Cookies""

To start off racial harmony we first have 87 year old Joesph Lowery have a "Archie Bunker" moment, now the unity that we now have with our first Black president continues with the "Drunken Negro Cookie". That's right, you heard me:

The Lafayette French Pastry bakery in the Village is super trendy. Their cakes were used on Sex and the City! And, like every other trendo, they're showing Obama some love. With, um, "Drunken Negro Head" cookies.

Yes, the shop's owner Ted Kefalinos decided to make a batch of cookies with bleary red cherry eyes and oversized nose and lips and give them the charming, sunshiney moniker. To, you know, celebrate our new darker-hued President. Adding to the insult, his sales pitch reportedly included vaguely ominous insinuations of assassination. He supposedly said to one customer:

Obama Administration Pops it's Cherry: First Air Strike in Pakistan

In keeping with Bush's administration on air strikes, the Obama administration has had it's first air strike. This bombing of course comes as a surprise to those in Pakistan who had hoped that Obama being elected into office would bring an immediate halt to these actions. During the campaign, Obama said he would launch attacks into Pakistan against terrorist leaders like Osama bin Laden if he had the intelligence to support such missions:

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) -- Missiles fired from a suspected U.S. spy plane killed 10 people Friday in Pakistan just east of the Afghan border, security officials said, the first such strike since the inauguration of President Barack Obama.

At least five of the dead were identified as foreign militants, an intelligence officer said.

The missile strike on the lawless region where al-Qaida militants are known to hide out is the latest in a barrage of more than 30 since the middle of last year.

Pakistan's pro-U.S. leaders had expressed hope Obama would halt the attacks, which have reportedly killed several top al-Qaida operatives but triggered anger at the government by nationalist and Muslim critics.

Islamabad routinely protests the strikes in the northwest as a violation of the country's sovereignty, but most observers speculate it has an unwritten agreement allowing them to take place, noting it would be highly damaging to be seen as colluding with Washington in attacks on its people.

Drill Baby Drill!! That's the Chant Right?

A proposal issued in the final days of the Bush administration to expand offshore drilling in previously banned areas will move forward under the administration of U.S. President Barack Obama, an Interior Department spokesman told Reuters on Wednesday.

Shortly after being sworn in on Tuesday, Obama ordered all federal agencies and departments to halt pending regulations until they can be reviewed by incoming staff.

Hugh Vickery, a department spokesman, said the department has been notified by the White House that it will be able to proceed with a proposed draft of a five-year plan to lease areas in the Atlantic and Pacific waters for oil and natural gas drilling.

The preliminary plan would authorize 31 energy exploration lease sales between 2010 and 2015 for tracts along the east coast and off the coasts of Alaska and California.

When the plan was unveiled last week, the department said it would provide the Obama administration with the option to begin leasing recently opened areas in 2010, two years before the current leasing plan is set to end.

The department issued a notice Wednesday requesting public comments on the plan. The comment period will be open for 60 days. After that, the Obama administration would have to decide whether to proceed with an official proposal, make changes or scrap it.

Both presidential and congressional bans on drilling in most U.S. waters ended last year.

The Interior Department estimates that the Outer Continental Shelf holds 86 billion barrels of oil and 420 trillion cubic feet of natural gas that have yet to be discovered. It is possible U.S. offshore areas, which have not been explored in 25 years, could contain more oil and gas.

Separately, Vickery said the department's plan to develop oil shale fields in the western United States would also continue.

Is Gillibrand Too Republican to Replace Clinton?

I probably would call her a democratic Sarah Palin. From what I read about her, she seems like a good pick. I know she will appeal to both republicans and democrats. If she doesn't work out and side with her own party over the important issues, believe me in New York she will quickly lose her seat:

Now that Caroline Kennedy has dropped out, the new frontrunner for Hillary Clinton's senate seat is upstate congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand, a Democratic hero for capturing a Republican-majority district in 2006. Camera crews are now posted outside her home in Hudson, New York, and she is reportedly telling Washington colleagues that she believes she will be tapped by Governor David Paterson, who is now in such a rush to announce a pick that he plans to do it either today or Saturday.

New Sasha & Malia Dolls Are Not Fashioned After First Daughters Says Beanie Babies Maker

No way, are you crazy. Two dolls one smaller than the other, bronze colored skin, named Sasha and Malia, that's just a coincidence.........right. When it comes to children, plain and simple they are off limits. They are obviously lying to make a profit on these little girls:

OAK BROOK, Ill. -- The company that makes the popular Beanie Babies is hoping for two more big winners with dolls named "Sweet Sasha" and "Marvelous Malia."

But, no, the names do not refer to President Barack Obama's daughters, a Ty Inc. spokeswoman says. Honest!

Ty released the 12-inch dolls as part of the company's "TyGirlz Collection." The Sasha doll has pigtails and wears a white and pink dress with hearts. The Malia doll has a side ponytail and a long-sleeve shirt with capri pants.

The Oak Brook-based company chose the names because "they are beautiful names," not because of any resemblance to Malia and Sasha Obama, said spokeswoman Tania Lundeen.
"There's nothing on the dolls that refers to the Obama girls," Lundeen said. "It would not be fair to say they are exact replications of these girls. They are not."

Judge Upholds Affirmative Action Ban

I have no problem with this as a minority. I have long since disagreed with Affirmative Action and what it does for race relations in this country. Racism will always be there, so I will fight my way through it just like everyone else:
LINCOLN -- A judge today upheld Nebraska's ban on affirmative action, ruling that a petition drive to place the issue on the ballot was legal.

Voters approved the initiative in November, after opponents of the effort filed a lawsuit in Lancaster County District Court.

The constitutional amendment never uses the words “affirmative action.’’ But it prohibits state and local governments from giving preferential treatment to people on the basis of race, sex, ethnicity or national origin.

The lawsuit challenged the validity of petition signatures, saying some were gathered using a “pattern of fraud and illegality.’’

But Judge Karen Flowers rejected the arguments, writing that the right to the initiative process “should not be circumscribed by a narrow and strict interpretation of the statutes pertaining to its exercise.’’

NYT: Housekeeper & Tax Problems Are Said to Reason Kennedy Dropped Senate Bid

Yeah folks, we all know how it is to have those pesky housekeeper problems. I have five myself so I know I have to make sure they are legal before I run for senate:

ALBANY — Problems involving taxes and a household employee surfaced during the vetting of Caroline Kennedy and derailed her candidacy for the Senate, a person close to Gov. David A. Paterson said on Thursday, in an account at odds with Ms. Kennedy’s own description of her reasons for withdrawing.

The account emerged 14 hours after Ms. Kennedy announced that she was taking her name out of contention for the Senate seat vacated by Hillary Rodham Clinton, and as Mr. Paterson, according to two well-placed Democrats told of his thinking, was leaning toward selecting Representative Kirsten E. Gillibrand, an upstate lawmaker in her second term in Congress.

Hard feelings toward Ms. Kennedy were clearly.......

Rush Limbaugh Fears That Obama Will Give Americans the Truth

Basically what Limbaugh is saying is that he thinks it is wrong that Obama is allowing the public the right to find out if their presidents are breaking not only the laws of the United States but international law. What about the constitution now Rush?

Norm Coleman Has a New Job

Norm Coleman (R) has taken a job with the Republican Jewish Coalition while contesting Democrat Al Franken’s lead in the Minnesota Senate race, his campaign confirmed Thursday. In what could be seen as a sign that Coleman thinks his bid to return to the Senate may be lost, he has signed on to do consulting work for the group, which is comprised of a number GOP leaders.

“The senator needs to earn a living while the contest is going on,” said Coleman spokesman Mark Drake, who said the job does not at all affect Coleman’s bid to win reelection. Coleman has been locked in a bitter fight with Franken since Election Day over the final outcome of the race. The state’s Board of Canvassers has certified Franken as its tentative winner, but an official challenge lodged by Coleman is still to be adjudicated.

Patty Blagojevich Gets Fired

CHICAGO (AP) — The wife of impeached Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich was fired from her $100,000-a-year job as a Chicago homeless agency's chief fundraiser.

The Chicago Christian Industrial League's board exercised a termination clause of Patti Blagojevich's contract on Tuesday, the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times reported on their Web sites Wednesday.

Interim Executive Director Mary Shaver told the papers she could not discuss personnel issues. She did not return telephone messages from The Associated Press on Wednesday.

Patti Blagojevich, 43, was "saddened" by the board's decision, said Lucio Guerrero, a spokesman for Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

"She enjoyed working at the CCIL and thinks the organization does a good job of helping empower those in need. She wishes her colleagues well in these financially trying times," Guerrero said in an e-mail to The Associated Press.

The company hired Patti Blagojevich in August. Earlier this month, officials from the nonprofit organization said its new $25 million shelter has left them desperate to raise money to continue its 100-year-old mission.

The governor was arrested in December in a federal fraud and bribery case and faces an impeachment trial in the state Senate next week.

Patti Blagojevich is not accused of wrongdoing and has not spoken publicly since her husband's arrest. Prosecutors have said she was recorded in a telephone call suggesting newspaper editors should be fired if the Tribune Co. wanted state assistance to sell Wrigley Field.

"Hold up that (expletive) Cubs (expletive)," she says as her husband talks on the telephone, according to the criminal complaint. "(Expletive) them."

Patti Blagojevich is also a licensed real estate broker and appraiser whose Chicago brokerage firm has raised questions about whether she benefited from contacts from her husband and her father, powerful Chicago alderman Richard Mell.

Obama Retakes Oath to Satisfy Critics

WASHINGTON — After the flub heard around the world, President Barack Obama has taken the oath of office. Again. Chief Justice John Roberts delivered the oath to Obama on Wednesday night at the White House _ a rare do-over. The surprise moment came in response to Tuesday's much-noticed stumble, when Roberts got the words of the oath a little off, which prompted Obama to do so, too.

Don't worry, the White House says: Obama has still been president since noon on Inauguration Day.

Nevertheless, Obama and Roberts went through the drill again out of what White House counsel Greg Craig called "an abundance of caution."

This time, the scene was the White House Map Room in front of a small group of reporters, not the Capitol platform before the whole watching world.

"We decided that because it was so much fun ...," Obama joked to reporters who followed press secretary Robert Gibbs into the room. No TV camera crews or news photographers were allowed in. A few of Obama's closest aides were there, along with a White House photographer.

Roberts put on his black robe.

"Are you ready to take the oath?" he said.

"Yes, I am," Obama said. "And we're going to do it very slowly."

Roberts then led Obama through the oath without any missteps.

The president said he did not have his Bible with him, but that the oath was binding anyway.

The original, bungled version on Tuesday caught observers by surprise and then got replayed on cable news shows.

It happened when Obama interrupted Roberts midway through the opening line, in which the president repeats his name and solemnly swears.

Next in the oath is the phrase " ... that I will faithfully execute the office of president of the United States." But Roberts rearranged the order of the words, not saying "faithfully" until after "president of the United States."

That appeared to throw Obama off. He stopped abruptly at the word "execute."

Recognizing something was off, Roberts then repeated the phrase, putting "faithfully" in the right place but without repeating "execute."

But Obama then repeated Roberts' original, incorrect version: "... the office of president of the United States faithfully."

Craig, the White House lawyer, said in a statement Wednesday evening: "We believe the oath of office was administered effectively and that the president was sworn in appropriately yesterday. Yet the oath appears in the Constitution itself. And out of the abundance of caution, because there was one word out of sequence, Chief Justice John Roberts will administer the oath a second time."

The Constitution is clear about the exact wording of the oath and as a result, some constitutional experts have said that a do-over probably wasn't necessary but also couldn't hurt. Two other previous presidents have repeated the oath because of similar issues, Calvin Coolidge and Chester A. Arthur.

Caroline Kennedy Wises up Drops Senate Bid

UPDATE 12:00am, Statement from Caroline Kennedy: "I informed Governor Paterson today that for personal reasons I am withdrawing my name from consideration for the United States Senate," she said in a one-sentence statement released after midnight. Her spokesman, Stefan Friedman, wouldn't comment further.

UPDATE 8:40 PM --Family stating Kennedy has not withdrawn her name.

Finally! "You know", She wises up and realizes, "you know" she was not ready for this. Caroline start out running for "you know" state representative first and see how that goes, but senate nowhere even close. Please give it to Cuomo:

Reporting by Daniel Trotta

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Caroline Kennedy told New York Gov. David Paterson on Wednesday that she is withdrawing from consideration to replace Hillary Clinton in the U.S. Senate, New York media reported on Wednesday, citing unnamed sources.

Kennedy, the daughter of slain President John F. Kennedy, has never held public office but launched an unusual public campaign to replace Clinton, who was sworn in on Wednesday as President Barack Obama's secretary of state and immediately afterward resigned from the Senate..

The New York governor's office made no immediate comment and a spokesman for Kennedy could not be reached.

Paterson had said he would wait until Clinton resigns from the Senate before naming a replacement.

The New York Times reported that Kennedy's decision to withdraw was prompted by concerns about the heal of her uncle, Sen. Edwad Kennedy, who was hospitalized after a seizure during an inaugural lunch for Obama on Tuesday.

Kennedy's withdrawal would leave New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo as a front-runner for the job. Cuomo is a former cabinet secretary under President Bill Clinton and the son of former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo.

The New York Times said Paterson is expected to announce on Saturday whom he has selected for the Senate seat.

Does White Conservative Christian America Think Blacks Are Seeking Revenge?

After reading articles in Word Net Daily and News With Views today both trying to read something into what Black people are thinking now that the country has elected it's first Black president, I must say I'm surprised.

I guess some White Americans are waiting for the roles to switch and that Blacks are considered by power to be the majority. This is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard. I actually find it insulting that people would think that Blacks are seeking to "take over" America.

I am sure that all of us at some time have experienced some form of discrimination in one form or another at least once in our lives. Imagine if you have had that same experience happen to you over and over again. What if you had it happen to your parents, their grandparents and so-on.

It's a feeling that is indescribable to those who have not experienced it. When a country you love is filled with so much hate for so long, and then that time finally comes when that country elects someone who fifty years ago could not even sit at a lunch counter as their president is a light you thought would take even longer to reach.

All cultures have gone through periods where the have overcame discrimination and later express tremendous pride and excitement. In this country alone the Native American, Irish, Chinese, Jewish etc... all have had trying times in the land of the free and have expressed immense jubilation in their advancements, why can't Blacks have theirs? At least the Native Americans got the land that was promised to them.

So if a Black news reporter makes a comment about being able to take the president's blanket after the inauguration ceremony without getting in trouble because he is black, it's just jubilation not revenge. When an 87 year-old civil rights leader and minister has a "Archie Bunker" moment in his last years and says some things that shouldn't be said, we're sorry.

Of course you will some idiots who already were under achievers claim that now they will get what is owed to them but that's natural.

Relax White America, Blacks are not thinking things are owed to us and we are gonna get it because Obama is here.

But the reality is Black America is just in a jubilation faze. With White America getting a 400 year head start on the American dream it's a long time coming and sometimes emotions get the best of of us.

WH Aides See Their Salaries Frozen By Obama

JENNIFER LOVEN | Associated Press

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama's first public act in office Wednesday was to institute new limits on lobbyists in his White House and to freeze the salaries of high-paid aides, in a nod to the country's economic turmoil.

Announcing the moves while attending a ceremony in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building to swear in his staff, Obama said the steps "represent a clean break from business as usual."

The pay freeze, first reported by The Associated Press, would hold salaries at their current levels for the roughly 100 White House employees who make over $100,000 a year. "Families are tightening their belts, and so should Washington," said the new president, taking office amid startlingly bad economic times that many fear will grow worse.

Those affected by the freeze include the high-profile jobs of White House chief of staff, national security adviser and press secretary. Other aides who work in relative anonymity also would fit into that cap if Obama follows a structure similar to the one George W. Bush set up.

Obama's new lobbying rules will not only ban aides from trying to influence the administration when they leave his staff. Those already hired will be banned from working on matters they have previously lobbied on, or to approach agencies that they once targeted.

The rules also ban lobbyists from giving gifts of any size to any member of his administration. It wasn't immediately clear whether the ban would include the traditional "previous relationships" clause, allowing gifts from friends or associates with which an employee comes in with strong ties.

The new rules also require that anyone who leaves his administration is not allowed to try to influence former friends and colleagues for at least two years. Obama is requiring all staff to attend to an ethics briefing like one he said he attended last week.

Obama called the rules tighter "than under any other administration in history." They followed pledges during his campaign to be strict about the influence of lobbyist in his White House.

"The new rules on lobbying alone, no matter how tough, are not enough to fix a broken system in Washington," he said. "That's why I'm also setting rules that govern not just lobbyists but all those who have been selected to serve in my administration."

In an attempt to deliver on pledges of a transparent government, Obama said he would change the way the federal government interprets the Freedom of Information Act. He said he was directing agencies that vet requests for information to err on the side of making information public _ not to look for reasons to legally withhold it _ an alteration to the traditional standard of evaluation.

Just because a government agency has the legal power to keep information private does not mean that it should, Obama said. Reporters and public-interest groups often make use of the law to explore how and why government decisions were made; they are often stymied as agencies claim legal exemptions to the law.

"For a long time now, there's been too much secrecy in this city," Obama said.

He said the orders he was issuing Wednesday will not "make government as honest and transparent as it needs to be" nor go as far as he would like.

"But these historic measures do mark the beginning of a new era of openness in our country," Obama said. "And I will, I hope, do something to make government trustworthy in the eyes of the American people, in the days and weeks, months and years to come."

SomeTroops Unhappy About Obama Pledge on Gays

Gays in the military what's the problem with that? I am a Christian and my believe is that homosexuality is wrong, but that's me. I either knowingly or unknowingly work, worship, get assisted by, protected, governed or live next to someone is homosexual.

There are plenty of Gays in the military as we speak, some have undoubtedly have saved the lives of their heterosexual counterparts, so I'm not seeing what the problem is. No matter what someone's moral believe on homosexuality is, know this, only God can judge:

Many U.S. troops in Iraq were overjoyed to see President Barack Obama take his oath, but some were unhappy about one thing the Democrat has promised to do: permit gay and lesbian soldiers to serve openly.

Obama said during his campaign he opposed a 1993 law stating that homosexuals are not eligible to work in the U.S. military, widely referred to as the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" rule.

This month, Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs, when asked whether the new administration planned to scrap the law, replied on the president's transition website: "You don't hear politicians give a one-word answer much. But it's 'yes'."

But some of the 140,000 troops still in Iraq almost six years after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion to topple Saddam Hussein appear uneasy about the prospect.

Ireland Says May Accept Some Guantanamo Inmates

DUBLIN, Ireland - The Irish government signalled on Wednesday it would be open to taking in detainees from the U.S. prison for terror suspects at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.

Minister for Justice Dermot Ahern said the priority U.S. President Barack Obama has given to closing Guantanamo created a "new context" to discuss the resettlement of detainees.

A spokesman for the minister said Ireland would be open to accepting inmates if there was an agreement at EU level with Washington on such a programme.

The Bush administration tried in vain to persuade allies, and EU nations in particular, to take in 55-60 inmates, of around 245 remaining detainees, who cannot go back to their home country and who the United States does not want either.

EU foreign ministers will discuss the issue at their next meeting on Jan. 26.

Switzerland, which is not in the European Union, said on Wednesday it is ready to consider taking in detainees if that helps shut Guantanamo down.

Pres. Carter Snubs Pres. Clinton?

Hamas Holds Rallies of Victory in the Face of Ruins

It seems no matter what you do to terrorists, they continue to defy everything. They use the people in Gaza as tools for their agenda against the west, Israel and all it's allies. Meanwhile Israel responds to getting attacked, pummels Hamas into the ground, and what does Hamas do? Hold a victory rally.

Israel had every right to defend itself, although I believe their respond was way over the line. When it comes down do it, they really did not accomplish anything. Over 1,000 dead and I guarantee Hamas will strike again once the truce is over. nothing will change.

It is impossible to wipe out a band of terrorist who have no strategic plan. Who hide among women and children who foolishly believe Hamas has their best interest at heart. A band of terrorist who have no qualms of sacrificing their one life to take out a crowd of fifty innocent people.

When both sides have the shear believe in their hearts that what they are doing is right, there will never be a winner. With no willingness of any involved to budge on their demands terrorist or democracy, this remains a war I can tell you will never see a end to.

Portion of New Jersey Turnpike Shutdown By Bomb Threat

Part of the New Jersey Turnpike is shut down in southern New Jersey as state police investigate a potential bomb threat.

New Jersey State Police spokesman Sgt. Stephen Jones said troopers took a 27-year-old Massachusetts man into custody following a car stop around 6:15 p.m. Tuesday in the southbound lanes of the turnpike in Woodbury Heights about six miles south of Exit 3.

Jones said state police stopped a Black Acura with.......

New WH Website Slams Bush on Katrina

I hoping Obama had no knowledge about the jab that is on the current White House website that is now under the Obama administration........ but anyway we need to move past pointing fingers. Bush is now the former president. We all as Americans know that the problems we currently face blossomed during the Bush administration. But now you, Mr. Obama own these problems and you and your administration must take them on. Campaign time is gone, if you point fingers in the future it will only diminish your leadership ability with the country as a whole. Good Luck sir:

The new White House website unveiled by President Barack Obama’s team Tuesday includes a shot at former President Bush’s response to Hurricane Katrina.

Under the “agenda” portion of the site regarding Katrina, it reads: “President Obama will keep the broken promises made by President Bush to rebuild New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. He and Vice President Biden will take steps to ensure that the federal government will never again allow such catastrophic failures in emergency planning and response to occur.”

PM Ehud Olmert Sends Congrats to Obama

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert thanked former President George W. Bush and congratulated President Barack Hussein Obama on Tuesday, shortly after Obama's inauguration.

Olmert thanked Bush for the friendship and closeness that prevailed between Israel and the United States during his term of office.

Both countries have shared values and saw eye-to-eye on many issues on the global agenda. The United States, including both parties, has been a true and strong friend of the State of Israel over the years, especially during former President Bush's term of office, the Prime Minister's Office said in a statement.

The One Senator Holding up the Clinton Confirmation

WASHINGTON -- A spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says Hillary Rodham Clinton will not be confirmed as secretary of state Tuesday because of a single senator's objection.

Reid spokesman Jim Manley said Republican John Cornyn of Texas has indicated he will block a move to confirm Clinton by an unanimous floor vote later in the day.

But Manley also said there would be a roll call vote Wednesday. And he predicted that "she will receive overwhelming bipartisan support" at that time.

The Senate does plan to confirm several of President-elect Barack Obama's Cabinet by unanimous vote later Tuesday.

Neither Cornyn nor his office was immediately available for comment.

Congrats and Thanks to Obama & Bush

To former president George W. Bush. I would like to thank you for your service to our country over the last eight years. I am sure you have made some choices you wished you could do over. I know you might have done things differently if you had to do it all over again. I have pretty much disagreed with almost all of your politics, but I do respect the enormous task you took on becoming the 43rd president.

While most of your critics will continue to chastise and bash you, I however will say thank you for your service to this country and enjoy your retirement in Texas.

To President Obama, I thought this day would take longer than it did. Maybe my grandchildren would see this but not me. My country has made me proud in over looking color and culture difference, and looking at the person himself.

Your appointment however historic, now enters a daunting task. You have inherited a large scope of problems that you alone are now responsible for. Your predecessor, I'm sure gladly has passed the torch at this time to you. I respect your courage in wanting a almost seemingly insurmountable task of restoring this country to it's former economic power.

You will face critics from all angles as did the former president, but I know from what I have seen of the man named Barack Hussein Obama, you are up for the task. God Bless you and your family and God Bless the United States of America.

"Sully" Pilot of Flight 1549 Will Attend the Inauguration

Chesley B. "Sully" Sullenberger, hailed as the hero of "the miracle on the Hudson,'' plans to accept President-elect Barack Obama's inauguration invitation.

Obama has invited the pilot who ditched a U.S. Airways flight in the Hudson River last week after a reported bird-strike of the airliner take-off from La Guardia - saving the lives of all of the passengers and crew aboard the downed Airbus - to attend his swearing-in outside the Capitol at noon Tuesday.

Canada, the New Face of Terrorism?

Just 4 days before the inauguration of Barack Obama, a gaggle of geese attacked a commercial airliner over the Hudson River in New York City . The brazen assault, called a "bird strike," happened minutes after USAirways flight 1549 departed from LaGuardia. We urge President Bush to show no mercy to these geese by invading a duck pond.

Sec.of Defense Gates will be in Hiding During the Inauguration

WASHINGTON (AFP) – U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates will sit out Barack Obama's inauguration at an undisclosed location as the "designated successor" in the event of a catastrophe, the White House announced Monday.

While the eyes of the world are glued Tuesday to Obama's historic swearing-in, attended by outgoing US President George W. Bush and both outgoing and incoming senior aides, Gates will stay away, said spokeswoman Dana Perino.

"In order to ensure continuity of government, Defense Secretary Robert Gates has been designated by the outgoing administration, with the concurrence of the incoming administration, to serve as the designated successor during Inauguration Day, Tuesday, January 20th," Perino said.

It is common practice for one senior US official to sit out major events, like the annual State of the Union speech, to ensure that the US government has clear leadership in the event of a disaster or terrorist attack.

But Washington has been especially attuned to the potential problems of succession because Obama's swearing-in is the first US presidential transition since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Gates is an unusually good choice as a bridge between the two administrations: Bush chose him to be his defense secretary in November 2006 and Obama has decided to keep him on in that post.

Gates "will be spending the day at a military installation outside the national capital region," said spokesman Geoff Morrell, who declined to offer further details, citing security concerns.

bush Commutes Sentences of Former Border patrol Agents

On his final full day in office, President Bush issued commutations for two former border patrol agents convicted in 2006 of shooting an undocumented immigrant who was smuggling drugs at the time.

The prison sentences of Ignacio Ramos and Joe Compean will now end March 20.

Ramos had received an 11-year prison sentence; Compean had received a 12-year sentence.

"The president has reviewed the circumstances of this case as a whole and the conditions of confinement and believes the sentences they received are too harsh and that they, and their families, have suffered enough for their crimes," a senior administration official said.

"Commuting their sentences does not diminish the seriousness of their crimes. Ramos and Compean are convicted felons who violated their oaths to uphold the law and have been severely punished," the official stated.

"This commutation gives them an opportunity to return to their families and communities, but both men will have to carry the burden of being convicted felons and the shame of violating their oaths for the rest of their lives."

The official noted that both Democratic and Republican members of Congress have supported a commutation, including President-elect Barack Obama's incoming White House chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, and Texas GOP Sens. Kay Bailey Hutchison and John Cornyn.

King's Dream a Crutch for Some, a Drive for Others

I won't make this post a long drawn out dedication to Dr.King and the great work he did before his life was taken, but rather I will focus on what his message is used for or means to people today.

Dr. King fought and died for civil rights for people of color, and as I sit here the day before we the American people swear in our first Black president, his dream has come true.

But what some see as change, others refuse to see progress and instead cling to the hatred that still exists here in our land of the free.

I am part Jamaican, African-American, Native American and surprisingly Scottish. All of that mixture in the eyes of everyone who I encountered over my life made me simply, Black. I was raised in an all Black neighborhood, most of my friends in early childhood were Black. My cousins and Aunts and Uncle's were Black, so that is what I was too.

You become what the world sees you as. even though my skin was light, my speech and my features resembled any other Black person.

I have have fought through many hard times to become the man I am today. I watched King's speech many times growing up and knew I would face racism in some form for the rest of my life. I knew I would run into those who would hate me no matter what. There was nothing I could do to change that.

I have been harassed, called out of my name and discriminated against because of who I am. Although anger built up inside, I pressed on. I did not allow hatred to divert my course in life. I refused to allow another man's cowardliness of me to alter my dream.

I have come to the realization that no matter what advancements are made in race relations, there will always be those who hate because of race or creed. I may face a tougher task than others in getting to where I want, but I will not be deterred.

For some of my brothers and sisters, it is a different story. I have many friends who I have grown up with that still use racism as a crutch or an excuse to why that have not succeeded or why they are still in the same position they were in ten years ago.

Yes racism will always exist, no matter how many Dr. Kings or other activists come along. I may have four doors close in my face instead of one because of my racial background, but I will walk through that door.

Thank you Dr. King for helping propel this country into a progressing nation that has elected someone as president, who forty-five years ago would have had to pay to even cast a vote.

The End of an Error ........The Bush Presidency

From one of my favorite conservative radio talk show and columnist, the Southern Avenger. He does a great summary of George Bush and the last eight years of downward spiral. I love the Avenger because he is not far-right but a true conservative who has no qualms about criticizing his own party when needed, like me with far-left liberals.

Why Do Conservatives Hate the New Hannity Show?

I had assumed Hannity going solo would cause the extreme right to celebrate and enjoy and settle in for one full hour of liberal bashing conspiracies, but early on it looks like I'm wrong.

Reading Hannity's own forum on his website, it seems viewers are not all impressed and even disappointed with the great American patriot Sean.

Johnny Dollar's place, a blog dedicated Fox News channel reporting, also calls Hannity's new show a dud.

As a center-left thinker I watch Hannity & Colmes regularly to get both sides of the spectrum. I watched as Alan Colmes would get bullied by Hannity and all the conservative guest he would have on. From time to time however Colmes would stand up for himself making things interesting.

When I watched the new show, it instantly reminded me of a Bizzaro Keith Olbermann. It was the same speech accept in conservative terms. Olbermann however has energy and is a wacko which makes him slightly more entertaining. Hannity, in my eyes struggles to pull in the audience and instead seems as if he is looking into the mirror and making himself feel good.

I will still watch him and Olbermann even though I can't stand either one, only for the simple fact it is fun to watch the far right and left go off insane and incoherent, idiotic tirades.

Here he blames Sen.Schumer NY(D) for the recent plane crash, priceless:

8 Foreign Journalist Allowed in Gaza

Will the conservative media now have to accept any video or pictures as reality and not some fake atrocities that they have been claiming? Will the liberal media now inflict even more criticism on Israel for attacking Gaza?

I
srael on Sunday allowed a pool of eight foreign journalists into the Hamas-controlled territory for the first time since the bruising military operation against the Islamic regime began three weeks ago.

The High Court of Justice had urged the State nearly three weeks ago to let foreign journalists into the Gaza Strip, following a petition filed by the Tel Aviv-based Foreign Press Association (FPA), which represents international journalists in Israel and the Palestinian territories.

"This is a step in the right direction," said Steven Gutkin, FPA chairman and Jerusalem bureau chief of The Associated Press.

Wealthy Men Give Women More Orgams?

I wonder why.......

Scientists have found that the pleasure women get from making love is directly linked to the size of their partner’s bank balance.

They found that the wealthier a man is, the more frequently his partner has orgasms.

“Women’s orgasm frequency increases with the income of their partner,” said Dr Thomas Pollet, the Newcastle University psychologist behind the research.

He believes the phenomenon is an “evolutionary adaptation” that is hard-wired into women, driving them to select men on the basis of their perceived quality.

The study is certain to prove controversial, suggesting that women are inherently programmed to be gold-diggers.

However, it fits into a wider body of.......

The Obamas Head to Church

(Barack Obama joined church officials in singing "We Shall Overcome" at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta in Jan 08')

I as do many know finding the right church home can be difficult. It is not just about worshiping but being able to get the message in a way that reaches you. Some ministers are just to boring, while many are way over the top with the theatrics. Obama and his family will probably have to settle on location and convenience for their church home
:

President-elect Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, began their search for a church closer to the White House Sunday with a visit to the morning services at the Nineteenth Street Baptist Church in northwest Washington.

More than 250 people, most of them African-American churchgoers dressed in their Sunday best, erupted in screams when the Presidential motorcade turned onto 16th Street, where the 169-year-old church now stands. At the church, Mrs. Obama waved to the crowd, evoking more cries.

Barack and Michelle Obama sat in.....
